Happy New Year!

First of all, I would like to commend everyone on the tremendous fall sales to finish out 2012. Looking ahead to 2013, low cattle inventory numbers and demand, both foreign and domestically make the market outlook for the coming year extremely good. Demand for quality angus genetics both in the seed stock and commercial sector has never been stronger.

With the good markets of the past year and the bright outlook ahead I think now is a good time for folks to get out to the bull sales and build your angus genetics. You may even want to spend a little more and make every effort to buy the bull you want, the one with the right genetic package to move your programs forward and position your outfit for a profitable future. You can bet there is an enthusiastic Montana Angus breeder that can help you fit your needs.

For many, calving season is under way or folks are putting the final touches on things to ensure success in putting a very promising calf crop on the ground. I can’t wait to get started. Although it presents some challenges and unexpected circumstances, I always look forward to calving season. Seeing the promise of a new herd sire and trying to identify that next “home run hitter” in the calving replacement heifers is always exciting to me. A new calf crop always reinvigorates me for the upcoming year.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone for allowing me to serve as president for the next year. I first became associated with Montana angus over 20 years ago. Being part of the Montana angus industry and getting to know so many fine folks in the Montana Angus Association has truly been one of the joys of my life. I have always been impressed with Montana angus breeders and their dedication and commitment to keeping Montana number one for superior black angus cattle. Let’s work to continue the legacy!

Check your calendars twice and don’t miss that bull sale you’ve been waiting for all winter. Hope to see you at a sale this spring.

Best regards,

Ken Cook,
President, Montana Angus Association
